The ruin and grounds of Titchfield Abbey are free to visit and offer a lovely place to ponder on Tudor times!
Now owned by English Heritage, it was originally built in the 13th century as a monastery and was home to a community of Premonstratensian canons. In 1537, the monastery was transformed into a mansion called Place House. Check out the English Heritage website for opening hours and directions and further historical facts.
Today, you can wander around the interior and exterior of the ruin, view the decorated mosaic floor tiles, and relax and enjoy the walled grounds. There are a few picnic tables or you can bring a blanket and sit on the lawn.
There’s not a huge amount to see but if you love medieval history, you will enjoy it, especially on a sunny day which offers great photo opportunities. There are various info boards dotted around the site.
Mill Lane, Titchfield, Hampshire, PO15 5RA
Note – The gated entrance is quite tight and narrow and take care when exiting onto Mill Lane! There is a small charge for parking but well worth a visit.
There is a very nice pub directly opposite called The Fishermans Rest so pop in for a drink if you have the time. They have a riverside garden and some good ales and food.
